The FBI of the United States has its own “no fly” list? According to msnbc.com, there have been two
recent cases of American-North African businessmen being denied flights back
into the United States, particularly returning from North Africa. According to this most recent case, Mustafa
Elogbi has been flying to and from Libya for the last three years. He was traveling home and when he reached
London, he was told he could not fly home and must return to Tunisia. The British officials stated that it was
Elogbi’s country (United States) forcing him to stay. But with the changes happening in Libya and
most of North Africa, the whole system changed and no one understands who the
FBI is targeting. These disruptions in
these two men’s plans have kept them from their families and friends.
Yes, since the attacks on September 11, 2001, more fears of
terroristic attacks have begun and will continue, according to New YorkTimes. Even though the United States has
been fairly quiet when it comes to terroristic attacks since that day in 2001,
fears of terroristic attacks have increased significantly. Other peoples’ fears have made more people
fear another attack, and possibly this is the reason for the FBI creating a
secret “no-fly” list. No one, not even
the family members of these men, knows why this practice is happening.
But just because of fears, does this give the government the
right for denying American citizens the right to fly? I do not believe so. Yes, these men have traveled to rioting
countries and have associated with them, but that does not mean they are harm
to our nation. These men should not have
been denied the right to return home to be with their families. They are not fully cleared until their last
flight home, because any stop, they could be forced to stay. Elogbi should not have been forced to stay in
another country to be questioned by our own country. He should have been able to return to the
United States, and, if still need be, questioned in his home country.
Why would our FBI send their men around the world to
question these men trying to return home in another country? What is the reason for all this secrecy? Why should our fellow American citizens
suffer from these acts of the federal government without reason? America needs to fix the secrecy and allow
American citizens the right to travel and return to their own country.
It is scary that our country will not let certain people back into the country. I understand if the person is not a US citizen and denying them access, but not a US citizen! If the government is so worried about these people flying to certain countries, then why even let them go if you aren’t going to let them back in? I would rather be restricted to not leave the United States than not be allowed back in. What the FBI is doing is wrong if they actually have a “no fly” list. We have rights, as US citizens, to leave and enter into the USA whenever we please (as long as we have the right paperwork and aren’t in conflict with the law).
ReplyDeleteJust because someone is a U.S. citizen doesn't mean that they cant be a terrorist. Believe it or not there are traders in this world. The government keeps things from us to keep people from freaking out. If they decide that these two men can't come back into the country it must be for a good reason, the government doesn't just decide that certain people look to suspicious so they put them on the "no-fly" list. They have gotten some kind of evidence giving them some kind of reason why they should question these men. And if they end up being wrong I'm sure that they will get a nice check to pay for their suffering. I would rather the government be overly careful than let something like 9/11 happen again.
ReplyDeleteFor these situations how does the FBI decide who they will and will not keep from coming back into the U.S. after leaving? In these cases were there any specific reasons why these men were not allowed back in to America? What qualifies them in making the “no fly” list? Since September 11th, 2001, the government has tightened up security and has gone to extremes to ensure the safety of the American people. If the government lightened up security and they didn’t go to the extremes to take the precautions they do, we would be making our country vulnerable and setting ourselves up for threats and attacks. We must not forget this. If someone is a U.S. citizen, however, they should be allowed to come and go as they please, as Morgan said. It is our right as Americans. Unless the FBI truly has legitimate reasons behind their actions and their “no fly” list, it doesn’t seem fair to not allow citizens back into the country.
ReplyDeleteThey are not going to tell us their reasoning on why they wont let these business men back into the U.S. They obviously were doing something suspicious and the FBI wants to stop them and question them before they are able to get an opportunity to make an attack. Better safe than sorry.
