Has Religion Always Been A Tool? Do religious people force their religion on other people? Possibly religious institutions have been built by governments, leaders, radicals, or even terrorists in order to control the people with fear, ideas, and norms simply because they lack education to determine for themselves. After watching Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus, which gives a specific religion, affirmed my assumption that people are so fickle and religious institutions are nothing more than tools used by the powerful in order to twist, bend, and indoctrinate the weak. However, the powerful could mean an upper class and even a lower class individual or group who are capable of gathering human and even economical resources in order to influence religion. In my atheist view this video Why I Hate Religion, And Jesus, again gives a specific religion, clearly presents the errors of religion, religious leaders, and the overall indoctrination techniques. Once an organization is born a hierarchal system is established. In a realist perspective this means once power is gained the group or individual desires for more which eventually leads to corruption of religion, religious leaders, and institutions.
Religion is the same as war, money and natural resources because each is used as a tool in order to accomplish victory over an opponent. However, every powerful individual or group who uses religion as a tool usually plays off the people’s lack of knowledge, but also to whatever that individual or group of people need. I view that religion was produced by the government and the upper echelons to control its citizen or caused informal obedience by creating a system of values. Another way is for the oppressed or lower class to create religion because of need for equality and freedom. Karl Marx famously said, “Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.(Age Of The Sage)
The holy crusades, is a great example of religion being use as a tool, in which the Roman Catholic Church uses its religious zealots to pillage and sack the Middle East to increase the wealth and power of the church. Even in the present individuals who I like to call radicals are using religion as a tool to indoctrinate the undetermined,“blind leading the blind,” in order to keep this ridiculous realist cycle of religious nonsense spinning. Example of this present day religion battle can be seen here Christians v. Atheist where individuals such as the Christian women argue with only emotions and curse words to validate her explanation. In my opinion this is way religion will always stay a tool because radical, blind, religious zealots will emotionally protect and attack foreign concepts because those laws of religion have been so engrained into books as well as people that it will take eternity to open people up to change or accept new ideas. I also view that all religions are the same there just in different perspectives and in a somewhat utopian society we live in today I don’t understand why this new age of people can’t accept these many religious perspectives, but as always humans go for the path of less resistance which is war, blindness, and stubbornness.

  1. I think a lot of people tend to get the wrong idea about religion from the Why I love Jesus, but Hate Religion video stated above. It somewhat makes it seem like religion has always been a bad thing that people have created and have used in wrongful ways since before Jesus was born , and that Jesus came to get rid of it. That’s simply is not true. Jesus came to get rid of false religion, to establish a new religion, Christianity, and show the human race how we were intended to have a relationship with God. Sadly, there are too many people who try to take advantage of religion as an establishment and make it work for themselves, but the fact of the matter is that all too often people just use religion as a scapegoat to blame for our own sinfulness and wickedness.

  2. The problem with grouping religion together as a whole is that there are many variations among different religions in the world. The beliefs change drastically between religions such as Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, or an African tribe. Many religions we encounter in the United States have one god, compared to the multiple gods of the Native American or African tribes. The exposure to different religions is very miniscule in America, especially in a state such as Nebraska. For these reasons I believe it is extremely difficult to group religions together and speak generally about religion.

To say that religions are used as a tool to provide victory over another group is skewing the entire base and core of a religion. There have definitely been a number of religions, which were completely political, and for personal interests only. But the majority of religions are not about gaining a victory over an opponent. Every religion has had a bad ruler or scandals, but does that make the religion itself corrupt? If everyone was to follow their religious beliefs perfectly and to the core, it could be argued that there would be no conflicts or problems in the world. It is human error and misunderstanding, not religion that is corrupt.

In the video, Why I Hate Religion But Love Jesus, the speaker presents himself and his message in an incredible manner. However, he is very mistaken and incorrect in some of his beliefs about the content of the Bible. The one example I will concentrate on is his comment about how Jesus came to abolish religion. Going along with what the Bible tells us, Jesus came to set up a religion, not abolish it. In Matthew 16:18 Jesus says, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Jesus also says in the Bible, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17) As well put together and impressive of a video as it is, the content is just not true.

  3. I agree with your idea that religion has been used as a tool since its creation. It is the most powerful tool on earth. It can be used to influence the largest masses known. This however is not always a negative thing and I feel in the whole scheme rarely is the case. While I am still an atheist, I think religion is an absolute blessing. Religion was and is the tool used to create modern society.

According to recent studies 60%-76% of America's population identify themselves as Christians. In comparison that would be between 184,203,930 and 233,324,978 people, the United States military has 2,278,895 persons on active duty and those in the 7 reserve components. That is from 80 to over 102 times larger in personnel. When command of these people are dictated by the powers of a government many times the power can be abused. Religion often is a reasoning to mask true agendas. Whether to declare war, justify persecution, or even murder. Religion is just the tool used but not always the party to blame.

Religion in peoples lives helps to inspire humanity. It gives people morals and values that are essential. In times of need its most often religious groups that step to the forefront. They are there for mankind to better themselves. Historically religions have funded hospitals worldwide. Religion promotes living a life that is very respectable. To treat a person how you would like to be treated. Where I am from when there is a need in the community the churches are the first to act. When families go through disasters they are fed, clothed, and sheltered by those of the church. They hold fundraisers for the betterment.

Religion also fueled the discovery and establishment of modern society. It promoted the expansion of the world. Like we spoke about in class. Armies have traveled the world over in the name of religion. America was flooded with those looking for religious freedom. While religion can be forced upon those who do not wish for it. It is only pushed because those people are so convinced in its salvation.

  4. In order to know what he meant in the video by abolish religion, you must know what religion was like in the bible times. The pharisees were the head of the church. They were the religious people of Jesus' time and they basically were religion. Thes people in charge of the church were even more corrupt than the common people. They stole and were prideful of their position. They would pray on the corners of streets so people would see them and think they were holy. This is what Jesus came to abolish. He wanted to get rid of the idea that "religion" is what Christianity was all about. Rahter, it is not about religion at all. As a christian i believe that being a religious person is not important. Importance is placed on having a one on one relationship with Jesus. You should love Jesus and because of this love for him, you should want to do what he tells you. As far as your argument that religion was made up by governments, I have a question for you. Where do morals come from? If there is no basis for any morality, then is there any morality? If there is no morality, than what stops people from murdering or raping?
